Engage for Change: Meet your MP, make your voices heard

October 3, 2024

The Muslim vote is back with its first campaign post the general election. Encouraging Muslims across the country to visit their MPs, engage in dialogue, and ensure their voices are heard on important issues. Politics does not end with elections, we must continue to ask our elected officials to represent the interests and values of their local constituents. From protecting the poorest and most vulnerable in society, to sanctions and a complete arms embargo against Israel. This may be the first time many Muslims have met with their MPs, opening the door for meaningful conversations and fostering greater political involvement. If just 70 Muslims nationwide make this effort, we can make a significant national impact and potentially sway crucial votes. The last general election saw historical mobilisation by the muslim community in the general election, seeing the election of 5 independent MPs. It is time to show that we will continue to engage and hold our elected officials accountable.

1. Email your MP asking for a meeting

If you’re writing to your MPs, make it precise and brief. Explain what you want to meet your MP about and the time(s) and date(s) you’d like to meet. MPs often have very full diaries, so prepare to be flexible about when you can meet. If your MP has regular surgeries you should also be able to find that on their website or you can phone their office and enquire when they will be taking place.

If you would like this is a potential template email

“Dear (MP Name),
I would like to meet you on the week of the 21st October to discuss the government response to the escalation by Israel in the Middle East as well as the latest cuts the government has made. Can you please let me know if you are holding any surgeries in the week or have any time for a meeting during that week.

Many Thanks (Your Name)”
